John Lapinski

Professor of Political Science, Associate Faculty Director

John S. Lapinski, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, Director of Penn’s Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies, and Associate Faculty Director of the Robert A. Fox Leadership Program. He also serves as the Director of Elections and the Data Analytics Lab at NBC News, which projects political races, manages, conducts and analyzes the exits polls for all NBC News properties for NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo and all of NBC’s digital properties. Dr. Lapinski earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University and his master in public policy from the University of Chicago. He was previously an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Yale University.

Professor Lapinski’s primary area of research is concerned with understanding national elections and public opinion. He has also conducted extensive research on lawmaking and the American South. He has published two books with Princeton University Press on lawmaking, and has a forthcoming third book with Princeton entitled Southern Nation. His work has also appeared in numerous journals and he writes extensively for NBC News digital properties. His work has been supported by numerous foundations, including the National Science Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Dirksen Congressional Center.
