Novick Urban Farm

Fellowship Description

Novick Urban Farm (NUF) is an educational non-profit garden located at Fort Mifflin on the Delaware focused on nutrition and agricultural education opportunities. The farm’s educational programs provide children’s groups, and people of all ages, hands-on experiences focused on sustainability, biodiversity, and nutrition.

 

The NUF Fox Fellow will assist with garden duties including organic vegetable production, educational visits for 3-to-7-year-olds, and community outreach. Some such duties are outlined below:

Farm Management and Production

  • Assisting lead farmer in all components of crop production (harvesting, planting, weeding, mulching, etc.)
  • Learning about and helping with crop planning and sustainable growing
  • Assist with educational visits including leading learning activities, maintaining a safe environment, and helping teachers and parents ensure garden rules are followed
  • The opportunity to help expand curriculum if desired

Community Outreach

  • Working with and managing volunteers at the farm with a focus on knowledge-sharing and safety

Youth Education

  • Assisting with corporate and community volunteer groups, including leading tasks

 

Fox Fellows at NUF will gain:

  • An understanding of urban food systems and growing practices
  • Knowledge of small-scale organic vegetable production techniques
  • The ability to work in a dynamic environment; this includes being comfortable changing tasks, working with/leading diverse groups, and feeling confident with a diverse population
  • Skills working with children and sharing knowledge effectively for each age group
  • Leadership experience, working with adult and youth volunteers and visitors

Summer fellows are expected to work full-time for NUF in Philadelphia, in a hybrid capacity.
